Marble vs granite: choosing natural stone

Compare marble and granite for your surface, care expectations, pattern and fabrication requirements before selecting an actual slab.

The application should guide the comparison

A feature wall, stair flight and working kitchen counter should not all be selected by the same rule. Start with exposure to spills, abrasion, moisture and cleaning. Then discuss the suitability of the exact stone rather than assuming every material sold under a broad category behaves identically.

Think about daily use

Marble can be affected by acidic substances, so a kitchen choice needs an honest discussion about care and changes in appearance. Granite is commonly considered for working counters, but the chosen stone still needs an appropriate specification, fabrication and maintenance plan. Ask for guidance on the actual material.

Compare the pattern at full size

Some people prefer visible veins; others want a more granular or evenly distributed pattern. These are selection preferences, not quality rankings. Look across the slab, including areas that will fall around cut-outs and joints. Catalog photographs are a starting point for the shortlist.

Ask the fabricator the right questions

  • How will this slab be cut for the drawing?
  • Where will seams sit, and how will exposed edges be finished?
  • What support and site preparation are required?
  • What cleaning and sealing guidance applies to this stone?
